Who: boys and girls, High School (9th -12th). Middle School (7th-8th) grades may practice with the school but not practice at golf courses or compete during matches (MS participation is at the discretion of the coach)
What: The most precise and leisurely sport on planet earth is golf. Golf is also best suited sport for the young and the super old and for all of your high profile business deals. It is a beautiful sport in which you whack a small plastic ball many hundreds of feet through manicured scenery into a hole 4 ¼” wide in the ground. For more information come and find out for yourself.
When: Spring (early March through early May). Practices are usually after school on weekdays until dark. Matches are typically mid-week only.
Requirements:
- $100 sports fee (due 2 weeks after season start)
- Sports physical (due prior to first practice, good for 2 years)
- Signed a Raggant Conduct form and Academic Expectations form
- Equipment:
- Waterproof golf shoes
- Waterproof rain gear
- Set of clubs and bag
Why: Golf is a sport that will appeal to those less interested in or able to enjoy contact sports. It is a sport that you can play after you start to develop gray hair and can’t make any sudden movements without worrying about breaking something. It is a truly lifelong activity that is well worth learning to enjoy at a young age.
[Further, and a deal more lore-ishly, I would say that Golf is a hobbit sport. I have 2 reasons for making this assertion. According to Tolkien, far back in the third age (1147 in the Shire Reckoning), golf was first invented by a sword wielding hobbit named Bandobras Took that cleaved the head off of Golfimbul, who was the king of some band of orcs at the Battle of Greenfields. The head flew through the air, tumbling eventually, down a rabbit hole. The battle was won and golf was invented, named after this raiding captain of orcs. I suggest that you focus your mind on sweeping off orc heads on your downstroke to improve your game. Secondly, it is also a peaceful, scenic, and beautifully green sport, as, according to lore, hobbits may generally appreciate. Critiques to these assertions can be lodged with Mr. Liden without appointment.]
