Making God look good. Adorning the doctrine of His creative majesty. That is essentially what ECS Athletics is doing, as we physically interact with the world God made using the bodies He created for His glory.
What does Christ-honoring culture look like as a high school kid? It isn’t resigned to tests and chores. What does classical education include? It isn’t limited to the trivium and quadrivium. A rattle toy is well suited for the infant mind and body, just as the soccer ball and tennis racket are suited for the high-schooler. Aristotle says that education, and here we mean the essence of classical human formation, is, or ought to be, a rattle toy for children of larger growth. Running shoes and the open road, a soccer ball and a golf club, these are excellent tools suited for the formation of high school human creatures.
Come on people! God is good to us! Get up and let’s go do some hard things together!
- We are anti-dualistic meaning that we do not think God wants us to merely cope with the physical world as value only the spiritual considerations. We use and enjoy the physical world to magnify God.
- We are anti-specialization meaning that we liberally educate our students to understand and master how to learn rather than merely what to know. We work to generalize our students, preparing them to flex and be exposed to varieties of God’s breadth of creation, to love broadly his attributes displayed in various subjects and sports.
- We are unpretentious and confident. We know we are sinful fallen humans that have been rescued by God from a real kingdom of darkness. This totally frees us up to laugh at ourselves and enjoy the confidence that comes from having a real savior. Risus Est Bellum.
- We work hard. We drill. We beat our bodies into submission to the task at hand and do hard things on purpose. The challenge is good and the work makes us happy. We simulate conflict, create a resolution and overcome the challenge. We lose and win and trust the Lord. This is how we grow and enjoy a more interesting personal story of life.
- We are comrades. HAHA! Yes, we are comrades indeed. This is where the true horsepower is located on our teams. We are together, we are friends who can be trusted and we certainly have a good time.
- We give thanks. We have nothing that wasn’t given to us by God. We are blessed and we are in the debt of a God who out-gives Santa. The cup of blessing overflows and we know it, receive it willingly, enjoy it and then we give praise, thanks and grateful hearts to God for it all.
May we develop the beauty, power, coordination and disciplined grit to perform our sports well, as unto the Lord of every square inch.
